Coal burning refers to the combustion of coal to produce heat or electricity. While historically vital, coal burning has significant environmental implications. The release of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide is a major contributor to climate change. Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides contribute to acid rain and air pollution, impacting human health and ecosystems. Concerns about these environmental effects have led to increased efforts to reduce coal reliance and explore cleaner energy alternatives. Modern coal-fired power plants often employ technologies to mitigate some of these emissions, such as scrubbers to remove sulfur dioxide and electrostatic precipitators to capture ash. However, the fundamental process of burning coal inherently produces pollutants.
