Coördinaatvlakken, often referred to as coordinate planes, are fundamental structures in geometry and mathematics used to represent points and relationships in a two-dimensional space. The most common coördinaatvlak is the Cartesian plane, named after René Descartes.

The Cartesian plane consists of two perpendicular lines, the x-axis (horizontal) and the y-axis (vertical), intersecting at a point called the origin (0,0). Each point on the plane is uniquely identified by an ordered pair of numbers (x, y), where 'x' represents the horizontal distance from the origin (the abscissa) and 'y' represents the vertical distance from the origin (the ordinate). These ordered pairs are called coordinates.

The intersection of the axes divides the plane into four regions known as quadrants. The first quadrant is where both x and y are positive. The second quadrant has a negative x and a positive y. The third quadrant features both negative x and negative y. Finally, the fourth quadrant has a positive x and a negative y.

Coördinaatvlakken are essential for graphing functions, solving systems of equations, and visualizing geometric shapes and transformations. They provide a systematic way to locate points and understand their spatial relationships, forming the basis for many advanced mathematical concepts.
