These bacteria are obligate anaerobes, meaning they thrive in environments without oxygen. Clostridial fermentation involves the breakdown of organic compounds, primarily carbohydrates, in the absence of oxygen, producing a variety of end products.

The specific fermentation pathway and its products depend on the particular Clostridium species involved. Common end products include short-chain fatty acids like butyric acid, acetic acid, and propionic acid. In addition to organic acids, gases such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen are often produced. Clostridial fermentation plays significant roles in various contexts. In the environment, it contributes to the decomposition of organic matter in anaerobic conditions, such as in soil and sediments. In the animal gut, these bacteria are part of the normal microflora and can aid in the digestion of complex carbohydrates. However, certain Clostridium species are also known pathogens.
