Cladistics is a method of biological classification that groups organisms based on shared derived characteristics, known as synapomorphies. This approach, also called phylogenetic systematics, aims to reconstruct the evolutionary history of life by identifying relationships among species. Cladists believe that only monophyletic groups, which include an ancestor and all of its descendants, are scientifically valid. These groups are called clades.
