Chthón, from the ancient Greek χθών (khthōn), means earth or ground and, by extension, the soil of the world. In classical usage, khthon designates both the surface of the earth and the subterranean realm. The term is the linguistic root of the English adjective chthonic, used to describe deities, powers, and cults associated with earth, fertility, and the dead, in contrast to the Olympian, celestial order.
