Cesis, also known as Cēsis, is a town in the Vidzeme region of Latvia. It is situated 95 kilometers (59 miles) northeast of the capital city Riga. Cesis is recognized for its historical significance, particularly its medieval castle, Cesis Castle (Cēsu pils). This castle is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the Baltics and has played a crucial role in Latvian and Baltic history. The town itself has a long history, with evidence of settlement dating back thousands of years. It was a significant center during the Livonian Crusade and later became a vital trading post.
