The maintenance of the cell wall involves a dynamic equilibrium between synthesis and degradation of its components. In plants, for example, the primary cell wall, composed mainly of cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin, is continuously remodeled during growth. Enzymes like expansins loosen the wall, allowing for cell expansion, while other enzymes are involved in synthesizing and depositing new wall material. Enzymes such as penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) are essential for cross-linking peptidoglycan strands, which is vital for maintaining wall strength. Inhibiting these enzymes, as antibiotics like penicillin do, leads to cell lysis. Fungi, with chitin as a primary component of their cell walls, also have elaborate mechanisms for synthesizing and assembling chitin, as well as enzymes that can modify or break down chitin for remodeling or repair.
