Cellväggsunderhåll refers to the biological processes by which a cell maintains the integrity and functionality of its cell wall. This is a crucial aspect of cell survival, particularly for organisms with rigid cell walls, such as plants, fungi, bacteria, and archaea. The cell wall provides structural support, protection against osmotic lysis, and determines cell shape.

The maintenance of the cell wall involves a dynamic equilibrium between synthesis and degradation of its components. In plants, for example, the primary cell wall, composed mainly of cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin, is continuously remodeled during growth. Enzymes like expansins loosen the wall, allowing for cell expansion, while other enzymes are involved in synthesizing and depositing new wall material. The secondary cell wall, which is thicker and more rigid, is built after cell growth ceases and involves the deposition of lignin in some plant cells, further strengthening the wall.

For bacteria, peptidoglycan synthesis and cross-linking are central to cell wall maintenance. Enzymes such as penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) are essential for cross-linking peptidoglycan strands, which is vital for maintaining wall strength. Inhibiting these enzymes, as antibiotics like penicillin do, leads to cell lysis. Fungi, with chitin as a primary component of their cell walls, also have elaborate mechanisms for synthesizing and assembling chitin, as well as enzymes that can modify or break down chitin for remodeling or repair.

Cellväggsunderhåll is also regulated by internal and external signals, ensuring that the cell wall adapts to environmental conditions and developmental cues. Disruptions to these maintenance processes can have severe consequences for the cell, leading to altered morphology, reduced fitness, or cell death.
