Cavalry refers to soldiers who fight on horseback. Historically, cavalry played a significant role in warfare across many cultures and time periods. The primary advantages of cavalry included speed, mobility, and shock value. Mounted soldiers could rapidly advance to attack enemy flanks, break through enemy lines, or pursue retreating forces. Their height advantage also provided a better vantage point for reconnaissance and communication.

Different types of cavalry existed, each with specialized roles. Heavy cavalry, such as knights or cuirassiers, were heavily armored and equipped for direct assault, often using lances and swords. Light cavalry, including hussars or dragoons, were less armored and focused on scouting, skirmishing, and raiding. Some cavalry units were also trained to fight dismounted, acting as dragoons.

The effectiveness of cavalry began to decline with the advent of firearms and improved artillery, which could inflict heavy casualties on mounted formations. While cavalry was largely phased out as a primary combat arm by the early 20th century, the symbolic importance of cavalry, particularly in ceremonial roles, persists in some modern military traditions. The term "cavalry" continues to be used metaphorically to describe a force that arrives quickly to provide assistance.
