The alcohol by volume of cask strength whiskies varies widely, typically around 50% to 65% ABV, and can be higher. Some examples exceed 60% ABV. Labeling might also indicate that the product is non-chill-filtered or natural color, terms used to describe flavor preservation and appearance.

Because of the higher ABV, cask strength whiskies are often enjoyed with dilution to the drinker’s preference, using water or ice, which can reveal different flavors and aromas.
