Carbureting is a process used in internal combustion engines to mix fuel and air in the correct proportion for combustion. The core component responsible for this is the carburetor. Inside the carburetor, a stream of air is drawn through a Venturi, a constricted section of the passage. As the air speeds up through the Venturi, its pressure drops, creating a vacuum. This vacuum draws fuel from a fuel bowl through a jet into the airstream. The fuel atomizes, breaking into tiny droplets, and mixes with the incoming air. The resulting fuel-air mixture then flows into the engine cylinders.

The amount of fuel entering the mixture is controlled by a throttle valve, typically operated by the accelerator pedal. Opening the throttle allows more air and fuel into the engine, increasing power. Closing the throttle restricts the flow, reducing power. Carburetors also incorporate various circuits to adjust the fuel-air ratio under different operating conditions, such as starting, idling, and high-speed running. These might include idle circuits, main jets, and enrichment circuits. While once ubiquitous in gasoline engines, carburetors have largely been replaced by electronic fuel injection systems due to their greater precision, efficiency, and emissions control capabilities.
