Capnia refers to the presence of carbon dioxide in the blood. While carbon dioxide is a waste product of metabolism, it also plays crucial roles in regulating respiration, blood pH, and cerebral blood flow. Normally, the body efficiently transports carbon dioxide from tissues to the lungs for exhalation.

Elevated levels of carbon dioxide in the blood are known as hypercapnia. This can occur due to various reasons, including lung diseases like COPD or asthma, hypoventilation (inadequate breathing), or certain neurological conditions. Symptoms of hypercapnia can range from mild shortness of breath, headache, and confusion to more severe effects like drowsiness, tremors, and even coma. The body attempts to compensate for hypercapnia by increasing breathing rate and depth, and by adjusting blood pH.

Conversely, low levels of carbon dioxide in the blood are called hypocapnia. This is typically a result of hyperventilation, where a person breathes too rapidly or deeply. Hyperventilation can be triggered by anxiety, pain, fever, or certain medical conditions. Hypocapnia can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, tingling in the extremities, muscle cramps, and lightheadedness. The body's response to hypocapnia involves a decrease in breathing rate to allow carbon dioxide levels to rise back to normal. Monitoring and managing capnia levels are important aspects of clinical medicine, particularly in critical care settings.
