Bélrendszert is a Hungarian term that translates to "intestinal system" or "digestive tract" in English. It refers to the complex series of organs responsible for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating waste products from the body. This system begins with the mouth, where food is ingested and initially processed, and continues through the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine.

The primary function of the bélrendszert is digestion and absorption. The stomach churns food and secretes acids and enzymes to break it down into a semi-liquid mixture called chyme. This chyme then moves into the small intestine, where the majority of nutrient absorption occurs. Here, enzymes from the pancreas and the intestinal walls, along with bile from the liver and gallbladder, further break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into smaller molecules that can be absorbed into the bloodstream.

Following absorption, the remaining undigested material passes into the large intestine. The large intestine's main roles are to absorb water and electrolytes from the remaining waste and to form it into solid feces. Bacteria residing in the large intestine also play a role in synthesizing certain vitamins. Finally, the feces are stored in the rectum and eliminated from the body through the anus.
