The pelvic cavity, or bækkenkaviteten in Danish, is the space within the pelvis. It is enclosed by the pelvic bones, which include the ilium, ischium, and pubis, forming the pelvic girdle. The pelvic cavity contains several organs essential for reproduction and waste elimination.

In females, the pelvic cavity houses the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, vagina, bladder, and rectum. The uterus is where a fetus develops during pregnancy. The ovaries produce eggs and hormones. The vagina serves as the birth canal and connects the uterus to the exterior. The bladder stores urine, and the rectum stores feces before defecation.

In males, the pelvic cavity contains the prostate gland, seminal vesicles, bladder, and rectum. The prostate gland and seminal vesicles contribute fluids to semen. The bladder and rectum serve the same functions as in females.

The pelvic floor, a muscular diaphragm, forms the base of the pelvic cavity, supporting the pelvic organs and playing a role in bowel and bladder control. The bony structure of the pelvis provides protection to these vital organs. The dimensions and shape of the pelvic cavity can vary, particularly between sexes, influencing childbirth mechanics in females.
