bäckenstruktur, also referred to in English as the pelvic structure, is the anatomical region at the base of the axial skeleton that connects the spine to the lower limbs. It is comprised of the sacrum, coccyx, and the two innominate bones (hip bones), each of which contains the iliac, ischial, and pubic processes. The pelvis is a ring-like bony framework that not only supports the weight of the thorax during standing and locomotion but also provides a passageway for nerves, blood vessels, and in females, the reproductive organs.

The bony components of the bäckenstruktur form the pelvic cavity, which houses the urinary bladder, rectum, and in females, the uterus and ovaries. Muscular, tendinous, and ligamentous elements, such as the levator ani, obturator internus, and sacrospinous ligaments, deepen the pelvic inlet and outlet and afford dynamic stability during activities ranging from walking to childbirth. The joint surfaces between the ilium and sacrum allow for limited but essential gliding motions that contribute to the overall flexibility of the lumbar region.

Clinically, abnormalities of the bäckenstruktur can lead to conditions such as pelvic fractures, subluxation of the sacroiliac joint, chronic pelvic pain, and recurrent urinary incontinence. Imaging techniques including pelvic radiography, CT scans, and MRI are routinely employed to assess bone integrity, soft tissue integrity, and to diagnose pathologies such as osteitis pubis or pelvic organ prolapse. Rehabilitation and orthopaedic interventions often focus on restoring the joint congruence and strengthening the musculature that supports the pelvic ring, thereby maintaining functional biomechanics and alleviating pain.
