The name is said to derive from the old Nordan word byt meaning “dwelling” with the suffix -ami forming a plural or collective.

Founded in the early 18th century by agrarian settlers from the upland districts, Bytami grew around a riverside crossing. It attained municipal status in 1864 and became a local center for agricultural trade.

As of the last fictional census, Bytami has about 1,150 residents. The population is primarily engaged in farming and small-scale crafts, with a notable presence of dairy farming and pottery. The village maintains a weekly market that serves nearby hamlets.

The terrain consists of gentle hills surrounding a small lake, with a temperate climate that features cold winters and warm summers. Land use is dominated by pastures and fields, with forests along the hillsides.

Cultural life centers on the annual Bytami Day festival, which includes market stalls, folk music, and traditional dances. Notable landmarks in the settlement include Bytami Church (built 1883) and the old mill, both preserved as part of the local heritage.
