Bruttoprimäärituotanto, often abbreviated as GPP, refers to the total amount of organic matter produced by producers within an ecosystem over a given period. Producers, primarily plants and algae, convert light energy into chemical energy through photosynthesis, forming the base of most food webs. GPP quantifies the energy captured from sunlight and converted into biomass before any energy is lost through respiration by the producers themselves. It represents the gross energy fixation of an ecosystem.

The calculation of GPP is crucial for understanding ecosystem productivity and energy flow. It is typically measured in units of energy per unit area per unit time, such as joules per square meter per year, or in terms of biomass per unit area per unit time, like grams of carbon per square meter per year. GPP is a fundamental component in ecological models and biogeochemical cycles.

While GPP represents the total photosynthetic output, not all of this energy is available to higher trophic levels. Producers utilize a significant portion of this energy for their own metabolic processes, such as growth, maintenance, and reproduction, through a process called respiration. The energy remaining after respiration is known as net primary production (NPP), which is the energy available to herbivores and decomposers. Therefore, GPP serves as the starting point for determining the overall energy budget and trophic dynamics of an ecosystem.
