Bromomethane, also known as methyl bromide, is an organobromine compound with the chemical formula CH3Br. It is a colorless, odorless gas at room temperature and pressure. Historically, bromomethane was widely used as a fumigant for agricultural and structural pest control due to its effectiveness against insects, nematodes, and fungi. It was also used as a refrigerant and in fire suppression systems.

However, its significant ozone-depleting potential led to its phase-out under the Montreal Protocol. The production and consumption of bromomethane have been largely banned or severely restricted in most countries since the early 2000s. Despite its widespread ban, some critical uses, such as for quarantine and pre-shipment fumigation, are still permitted under strict regulations.

Bromomethane is toxic and can cause neurological damage, respiratory problems, and other health issues upon exposure. It is classified as a hazardous substance. Environmental concerns extend beyond ozone depletion; it can also contribute to groundwater contamination if not handled properly. Research continues to explore alternative, less harmful methods for pest control and fumigation.
