booksGenesis is a digital library and bibliographic database focused on the origins and development of printed books. It aggregates digitized texts, metadata, and scholarly tools to support research in book history, typography, and publishing. The collection emphasizes early printing, incunabula, and related documentary sources, while also linking to modern studies that illuminate the genesis of book forms and distribution networks.

Content includes high-resolution images of public-domain works, machine-readable metadata records, full-text OCR where available, and user-contributed annotations and bibliographies. The platform aims to provide provenance data, including imprint, pagination, and binding details, to facilitate cross-institutional study. It also offers curated bibliographies and cross-references to library catalogs and holding records.

Technology and features include a collaborative metadata schema combining standard bibliographic fields with a custom extension for printing history. Users can search by author, place of publication, printer, or material format; browse incunabula by century; and access transcription and annotation tools. An API allows programmatic access to metadata and image URLs, supporting digital humanities workflows and integrating with partner repositories.

History and governance: Established in 2015 by a consortium of national libraries and a university press, booksGenesis launched a public beta in 2017. It is operated as a non-profit with an international advisory board and participating institutions contributing scans, metadata, and technical expertise.

Access and impact: The service is free for non-commercial research and education; images and metadata are provided under open licenses where possible.
