Bookmatching is a method used to create mirrored patterns in thin sheets of material by cutting from a single source and opening the pieces like a book. The result is a symmetrical or continuous figure that appears to be reflected across the seam.

In wood veneer work, a log is converted into thin sheets by peeling or slicing. Two consecutive veneers are cut from opposite faces of a single piece and then joined so that their grain runs in the same direction. When opened like pages, the pair forms a mirrored pattern across the joint. The seam is typically placed where the matched faces meet, and the veneers are glued onto a substrate such as plywood or particleboard.

In stone, bookmatching involves cutting slabs from a quarry block along a plane that reveals veining or color variation. The adjacent slabs are laid beside each other to create a mirrored image, producing a dramatic effect on countertops, walls, or floors. This technique is common with marbles and granites and is often used for feature surfaces in interiors.

Advantages of bookmatching include enhanced visual depth, a sense of continuity, and the perceived artistry of the surface. It can increase the perceived value of furniture, cabinetry, and architectural finishes. Limitations include material waste due to the necessary cuts, potential mismatch in color or figure, and changes in appearance with finishing, lighting, or aging.
