Body tissue refers to a collection of cells that are similar in structure and function. These cells are organized into tissues, which are the building blocks of organs and organ systems in the body. There are four primary types of body tissue: epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue.

Epithelial tissue covers the body's surfaces, lines body cavities, and forms glands. It acts as a barrier, protects underlying tissues, and is involved in absorption, secretion, and filtration. Examples include the skin and the lining of the digestive tract.

Connective tissue supports, connects, or separates different types of tissues and organs in the body. It is characterized by its extracellular matrix, which can be fluid, gel-like, or solid. Bone, cartilage, blood, and adipose (fat) tissue are all types of connective tissue.

Muscle tissue is specialized for contraction, which produces movement. There are three types of muscle tissue: skeletal muscle, which is voluntary and attached to bones; smooth muscle, which is involuntary and found in internal organs; and cardiac muscle, which is involuntary and found in the heart.

Nervous tissue is responsible for transmitting electrical signals throughout the body, allowing for communication and coordination. It consists of neurons, which transmit nerve impulses, and glial cells, which support and protect neurons. The brain, spinal cord, and nerves are composed of nervous tissue. Together, these four tissue types form all the structures and enable all the functions of the human body.
