Blåforskjøvet is a Norwegian term that translates to "blue-shifted" in English. It describes the phenomenon in astronomy where the light from an object is shifted towards shorter, bluer wavelengths. This shift occurs when the light source is moving towards the observer. The magnitude of the shift is proportional to the relative velocity between the source and the observer.

The opposite effect is known as rødforskjøvet, or redshift, where light is shifted towards longer, redder wavelengths when the source is moving away from the observer. The Doppler effect, a well-known physical principle, is the underlying cause of both blueshift and redshift.

In astronomy, observing a blueshift in the light from a celestial object, such as a star or galaxy, indicates that it is approaching our solar system. By measuring the precise amount of the blueshift, astronomers can calculate the object's radial velocity, which is its speed directly towards or away from us. While redshift is more commonly discussed in the context of the expansion of the universe, blueshift is equally important for understanding the local motions of stars within our galaxy and the movements of nearby galaxies. For instance, the Andromeda Galaxy is blueshifted relative to the Milky Way, indicating that it is on a collision course with our own galaxy.
