Bitmélység refers to the number of bits used to represent the color of a single pixel in a digital image or on a display. A higher bit depth allows for a wider range of colors and smoother tonal transitions.

For example, an 8-bit image can display 256 different colors per channel (red, green, blue). This results in a total of 256 x 256 x 256, or approximately 16.7 million possible colors. In contrast, a 1-bit image can only represent two colors, typically black and white. A 24-bit image, commonly known as true color, uses 8 bits for each of the red, green, and blue color channels, totaling 24 bits per pixel and producing the 16.7 million colors.

Higher bit depths, such as 10-bit or 12-bit color, provide even more distinct color values. This increased precision is particularly beneficial in professional photography and video editing, where subtle variations in color and shadow detail are crucial. Displays with higher bit depth can render more lifelike images with greater detail in both bright highlights and deep shadows, reducing the appearance of banding or posterization in gradients. The storage and processing requirements also increase with higher bit depths.
