biphenyly
Biphenylyl refers to a substituent group derived from biphenyl. Biphenyl is an organic compound with the chemical formula (C6H5)2. It consists of two phenyl rings connected by a single bond. When biphenyl loses one hydrogen atom from either of its phenyl rings, the resulting monovalent radical or group is called a biphenylyl group. The most common form is the 4-biphenylyl group, where the connection is at the para position of one of the phenyl rings. Other isomers exist, such as 2-biphenylyl and 3-biphenylyl, depending on the position of the attachment point on the phenyl ring. Biphenylyl groups are often found as structural components in various organic molecules, including pharmaceuticals, liquid crystals, and polymers, where they can influence the physical and chemical properties of the larger compound, such as rigidity, thermal stability, and optical characteristics.
