Biozymes are a class of organic compounds, primarily proteins, that act as biological catalysts. They accelerate specific biochemical reactions within living organisms without being consumed in the process. Each biozyme is highly specific, meaning it typically catalyzes only one or a very limited range of reactions. This specificity is due to the unique three-dimensional structure of the biozyme, particularly its active site, which is shaped to fit a particular molecule, known as a substrate.

The mechanism of biozyme action involves binding the substrate to the active site, forming a biozyme-substrate complex. Within this complex, the reaction occurs more readily due to factors such as proximity of reactants, orientation, and strain on substrate bonds. Once the reaction is complete, the products are released from the active site, and the biozyme is free to catalyze another reaction.

Biozymes are essential for virtually all biological processes, including metabolism, DNA replication, muscle contraction, and nerve signal transmission. Without biozymes, these reactions would occur too slowly to sustain life. They function under specific conditions of temperature and pH, and their activity can be regulated by various factors, including the presence of activators or inhibitors.
