Biotopilles are small-scale biotopes—discrete, spatially limited units that sustain distinctive biological communities. The term highlights microhabitats whose size, structure, and resources create ecological conditions different from the surrounding landscape. It derives from biotope with the French diminutive -ille, signaling a miniature or specialized biotope.

Biotopilles form where physical features such as rock, soil, water, or vegetation create patches with different moisture, temperature, shelter, or nutrients. Examples include moss cushions on walls, tiny ponds in pavement depressions, leaf-litter patches, soil pockets in roots, and tree holes. In urban areas, cracks in concrete or mossy roofs can also host biotopilles.

Ecologically, biotopilles can host communities distinct from nearby habitats and may include specialized or rare taxa. They contribute to local biodiversity and can aid ecological resilience by providing refugia, dispersal stepping stones, or hotspots of decomposition and primary production at fine scales.

Research approaches combine microhabitat mapping, targeted sampling, microclimate logging, and, increasingly, DNA-based methods to describe resident communities. The term is used variably; some authors treat biotopilles as a synonym of microhabitats or microbiotopes, while others treat them as a distinct scale of habitat. Standardization is limited, and ongoing discussion aims to clarify definition and comparability.
