Biosimilaariversioita, often referred to as biosimilars, are biological products that are highly similar to an already approved biological medicine, known as the reference product. These medicines are developed to be as safe and effective as their reference counterparts. The development process for biosimilars involves rigorous scientific evaluation to demonstrate this similarity. Unlike generic drugs which are copies of small-molecule chemical drugs, biosimilars are manufactured using living cells and are therefore more complex.

The key principle behind biosimilars is that they do not have clinically meaningful differences in terms of safety, purity, and potency compared to the reference product. Regulatory agencies, such as the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), have specific guidelines for approving biosimilars. These guidelines require extensive analytical, non-clinical, and clinical studies to confirm the similarity.

The introduction of biosimilars is intended to increase competition in the market for biological medicines. This increased competition can potentially lead to lower healthcare costs, improved patient access to innovative treatments, and greater treatment options for various diseases, including cancer, autoimmune disorders, and diabetes. While biosimilars are highly similar, they are not identical to the reference product due to the inherent variability in biological manufacturing processes. However, these minor differences are not considered clinically significant.
