Biopolimerek are polymers that originate from living systems or renewable resources. They encompass natural polymers that occur in nature as well as materials synthesized through biological processes such as fermentation. Biopolymers are frequently biodegradable in appropriate environments, offering potential advantages for sustainability, medicine, and biotechnological applications.

Common natural biopolymers include polysaccharides such as cellulose, starch, chitin, and pectin; proteins such as collagen, gelatin, and silk; and nucleic acids such as DNA. Microbially produced polymers, notably polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), are also classified as biopolymers. Another widely used biobased, but not always biodegradable, polymer is polylactic acid (PLA), produced from renewable sugars.

Properties of biopolymers vary widely. They can be hydrophilic or hydrophobic, have a range of thermal stability, and different mechanical strengths. Processing often requires gentler conditions or tailored formulations, and biodegradation depends on environment (industrial composting vs soil, marine).

Applications span packaging, agriculture, coatings, and biomedical fields such as drug delivery, wound dressings, and tissue engineering scaffolds. Biopolymers face challenges including higher production costs, variability, and performance gaps relative to conventional petrochemical polymers, as well as regulatory considerations in medical uses.

Life cycle and sustainability considerations emphasize renewable sourcing and end-of-life options. Biopolymers can reduce dependence on fossil resources, but their environmental benefits depend on production efficiency, land use, and composting or degradation conditions.
