Biomolecule is a general term for molecules that are produced by living organisms. These molecules are essential for life and play crucial roles in various biological processes. Biomolecules can be broadly classified into four major categories: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.

Carbohydrates are organic compounds composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, often in a ratio of 1:2:1. They serve as a primary source of energy for cells and are also involved in structural support, such as in plant cell walls. Simple sugars like glucose are monosaccharides, while more complex carbohydrates like starch and glycogen are polysaccharides.

Lipids, also known as fats, are a diverse group of molecules that are insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. They include fatty acids, triglycerides, phospholipids, and steroids. Lipids are important for energy storage, cell membrane structure, insulation, and hormone production.

Proteins are complex macromolecules made up of amino acid subunits linked together by peptide bonds. They perform a vast array of functions in the body, acting as enzymes to catalyze biochemical reactions, structural components like collagen, transporters of molecules, and key players in immune responses. The sequence of amino acids determines the protein's unique three-dimensional structure and function.

Nucleic acids are polymers of nucleotides, each consisting of a phosphate group, a five-carbon sugar, and a nitrogenous base. The two main types are deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA). DNA carries the genetic information that directs the synthesis of proteins and is passed from one generation to the next. RNA plays vital roles in protein synthesis and gene regulation. These four classes of biomolecules are fundamental to the structure, function, and reproduction of all known life forms.
