Biogasbased refers to systems, processes, or products that utilize biogas as their primary energy source or a significant component. Biogas itself is a renewable energy gas produced from the anaerobic digestion of organic matter. This organic matter can include animal manure, agricultural waste, sewage sludge, food waste, and energy crops. The digestion process breaks down these materials in the absence of oxygen, releasing a mixture primarily composed of methane and carbon dioxide, along with smaller amounts of other gases.

Biogasbased applications are diverse and growing. In agriculture, biogasbased digesters are used to treat manure from livestock, producing biogas for heating farm buildings, powering machinery, or generating electricity. This also provides a nutrient-rich digestate, which can be used as fertilizer, reducing the need for chemical alternatives. In municipal settings, biogasbased systems are employed to treat sewage sludge and food waste, with the generated biogas being used for heating and electricity in treatment plants or fed into the natural gas grid after purification.

The concept of biogasbased extends to transportation, where purified biogas, known as biomethane, can be used as a fuel for vehicles, offering a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels. Furthermore, biogasbased technologies are being explored for industrial processes and for decentralized energy generation in rural communities. The overall aim of biogasbased approaches is to create a circular economy by managing organic waste effectively and producing sustainable energy.
