Biogaasitöötlusüksusteks refers to facilities designed for the processing of biogas. Biogas is a renewable fuel produced by the anaerobic digestion of organic matter, such as agricultural waste, animal manure, sewage sludge, and food waste. The raw biogas produced from digesters typically contains a mixture of gases, primarily methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), along with smaller amounts of other gases like hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and water vapor.

The purpose of a biogas treatment unit is to purify the raw biogas to a usable quality. This process, often called upgrading, aims to increase the methane content and remove impurities. The specific treatment steps depend on the intended use of the biogas. For energy generation in combined heat and power (CHP) plants, a less stringent purification might be sufficient. However, for injection into the natural gas grid or for use as vehicle fuel, a higher level of purification is required.

Common treatment processes include desulfurization to remove hydrogen sulfide, which is corrosive and has an unpleasant odor. Dehumidification is also crucial to remove water vapor, preventing ice formation and corrosion in pipelines and equipment. Further purification steps might involve removing CO2 to increase the methane concentration, a process often referred to as biomethane production. Technologies used for CO2 removal include water scrubbing, pressure swing adsorption (PSA), and membrane separation. The resulting purified biogas, or biomethane, has a methane content comparable to natural gas and can be used interchangeably in many applications.
