Biodegradoituminen, or biodegradation, is the process by which organic substances are broken down by microorganisms into simpler compounds such as carbon dioxide, water, methane, and biomass. Materials are assessed for biodegradability in different contexts, including soil, freshwater or marine environments, and controlled composting facilities. In consumer and industrial use, it is common to distinguish between biodegradable and compostable materials, with compostable implying degradation under defined composting conditions to non-toxic end products within a specified timeframe. It is important to note that a material labeled biodegradable in one environment may degrade slowly or incompletely in another, and some materials can fragment into microplastics or release intermediates if not fully mineralized.
