Bindvävscell is the Swedish term for a cell found in connective tissue. Connective tissue is one of the four basic types of animal tissue, alongside epithelial tissue, muscle tissue, and nervous tissue. Its primary role is to support, connect, and separate different types of tissues and organs in the body. Bindvävsceller are a diverse group of cells that contribute to the structure and function of this connective tissue.

Fibroblasts are the most common type of bindvävscell. They are responsible for synthesizing the extracellular matrix, which includes collagen, elastic fibers, and ground substance. This matrix provides structural support and determines the physical properties of the connective tissue. Other types of bindvävsceller include adipocytes (fat cells), which store energy and provide insulation; chondrocytes, which form cartilage; and osteocytes, which are found in bone.

Immune cells, such as macrophages and mast cells, are also considered bindvävsceller as they reside within connective tissues and play crucial roles in defense and inflammation. The specific types and proportions of bindvävsceller vary depending on the location and function of the connective tissue. For example, dense connective tissue, found in tendons and ligaments, has a high proportion of fibroblasts and collagen fibers to provide strength, while loose connective tissue, found throughout the body, has a more varied cell population and a looser matrix.
