Bilobulación refers to a condition where an organ or a structure is divided into two lobes. This can occur naturally as a normal anatomical feature or as a result of a developmental anomaly or pathological process. In normal anatomy, many organs exhibit bilobation. For instance, the lungs are bilobulated, with the right lung having three lobes and the left lung having two lobes. Similarly, some glands, like the salivary glands, can have distinct lobules.

However, bilobulation can also be an abnormal finding. In some congenital conditions, organs that are not typically bilobulated may present with this characteristic due to errors in embryonic development. For example, certain heart malformations can involve the abnormal division of cardiac chambers. Pathologically, a tumor or an inflammatory process can cause an organ to appear bilobulated, creating a divided appearance that may be visible on imaging studies. The significance of bilobulation depends heavily on the specific organ involved and whether it represents a normal variation or an indication of disease. Radiologists and pathologists often observe and report bilobulation as a descriptive finding during the examination of medical images or tissue samples.
