Behållarodlade is a term encountered in some Swedish-language sources referring to an approach to cultivation in which living cultures are maintained on or within rod-shaped carriers in a contained environment. The word is a compound of behållare (container) and odlad, past participle of odla (to cultivate), adapted to describe systems that immobilize or support cultures in rod-like substrates.

In practice, behållarodlade systems may be used in microbiology, biotechnology, and bioprocess engineering to improve stability, allow continuous or repeated use of biological material, and facilitate downstream processing by providing discrete, separable units.

Two main variants are described: immobilization on rod-shaped carriers, such as ceramic or polymer rods, enabling high surface area in a compact bioreactor; and cultivation within rod-like porous scaffolds that guide colony morphology.

Operational considerations include mass transfer limitations, carrier material compatibility, and sterilization. Compared with free-suspension cultures, behållarodlade systems may offer improved control over growth, easier harvesting, and potential for continuous operation, but can suffer from diffusion limitations and fouling of carrier surfaces.

The term appears mainly in Swedish-language texts and is not widely standardized in international literature; in many contexts, more specific terms such as immobilized-cell cultivation, carrier-assisted fermentation, or packed-bed bioreactors are used.
