Beetalaktamaasinestäjät, often referred to as beta-lactamase inhibitors, are pharmaceutical compounds designed to counteract the effects of beta-lactamase enzymes produced by bacteria. These enzymes are a primary mechanism by which bacteria develop resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics, such as penicillins and cephalosporins. Beta-lactamase enzymes work by cleaving the beta-lactam ring, which is the core structural component of these antibiotics, thereby rendering them inactive.

Beetalaktamaasinestäjät themselves possess minimal or no intrinsic antibacterial activity. Their primary function is to bind to and inactivate beta-lactamase enzymes. By doing so, they protect co-administered beta-lactam antibiotics from degradation. This allows the antibiotic to reach its target within the bacterial cell and exert its intended therapeutic effect, which is typically the disruption of bacterial cell wall synthesis.

Commonly used beta-lactamase inhibitors include clavulanic acid, sulbactam, and tazobactam. These are frequently formulated in combination with specific beta-lactam antibiotics. For example, amoxicillin is often combined with clavulanic acid, and piperacillin with tazobactam. These combination drugs are crucial in treating infections caused by bacteria that have developed resistance through beta-lactamase production, thereby expanding the spectrum of activity of the associated antibiotic.
