Barrier properties refer to the ability of a material to resist the passage of substances. This is a crucial characteristic in many applications, particularly in packaging and material science. The primary substances that materials are designed to act as barriers against include gases, liquids, vapors, and even light.

In the context of food packaging, barrier properties are essential for preserving freshness and extending shelf life. For instance, a good oxygen barrier prevents oxidation, which can lead to spoilage and off-flavors. Similarly, a moisture barrier prevents the ingress of water vapor, which can cause products to become soggy or dry out. The permeability of a material, which is the inverse of its barrier property, is often measured in units like gas transmission rate (GTR) or water vapor transmission rate (WVTR).
