barophilus

Barophilus is a genus of archaea in the family Thermococcaceae, order Thermococcales. Members are extremophiles that are both thermophilic and piezophilic, adapted to the high temperatures and hydrostatic pressures characteristic of deep-sea hydrothermal vent systems. They have been isolated from vent fluids and sediments at mid-ocean ridges and back-arc basins.

Physiology and metabolism: Barophilus species are small, single-celled, anaerobic and chemoorganotrophic archaea. They typically grow by fermenting organic substrates such as peptides and amino acids, often coupled to sulfur compounds as electron acceptors; hydrogen sulfide can be produced as a byproduct. Growth occurs optimally at high temperatures, typically around 80–90°C, and under elevated pressures, reflecting their barophilic lifestyle.

Ecology and significance: In vent ecosystems, Barophilus participates in carbon and sulfur cycling and forms part of microbial communities that sustain vent productivity. The enzymes and proteins of barophiles are of interest for studying life under extreme conditions and for potential industrial applications requiring thermostability and pressure tolerance.
