bankszámlaszám

A bankszámlaszám is a unique identifier for a bank account within a financial institution. It is used to receive and send payments, settle transactions, and link accounts to customers and businesses. In everyday Hungarian banking, the term refers to the domestic account number assigned by the bank.

For international payments, the bankszámlaszám is represented within the IBAN (International Bank Account Number). In Hungary, the IBAN starts with the country code HU, includes two check digits, and then a Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN) that encodes the domestic bank identifier, branch information, and the account number. The Hungarian IBAN is 28 characters long in total. The exact internal layout of the BBAN is bank-specific, but the IBAN provides a standardized way to perform cross-border transfers.

Within Hungary, a bankszámlaszám is typically needed on invoices, payment orders, and bank forms. When sending money domestically, the domestic account number may be sufficient, but for cross-border payments the IBAN (and sometimes the BIC/SWIFT code) is required. The bankszámlaszám and the IBAN are related but not identical: the former is the local identifier, while the latter is the international representation used for cross-border settlement.
