Ballenmolens, or ball mills, are a type of grinder used to grind or blend materials for use in mineral processing, cement production, ceramics, paints, and chemical synthesis. They operate by rotating a hollow cylinder filled with grinding media and material to be ground.

The operating principle relies on impact and attrition. As the drum turns, the balls are lifted up the side of the mill and then cascade down, striking the material and breaking it into finer particles. This process can be conducted in dry conditions or in wet milling, where a liquid forms a slurry that aids heat dissipation and dispersion of particles. The milling action continues until the material reaches the desired fineness.

Construction and components include a cylindrical or conical shell, internal lining to resist wear, and grinding media such as steel or ceramic balls. The mill is driven by a motor connected to the drum via a gear and pinion or belt drive. End caps, bearings, and seals allow rotation while containing the material. Discharge can be open or through a grate, and some designs use a closed-circuit arrangement with classifiers or screens to control particle size.

Variants of ball mills include planetary ball mills, where independent jars rotate on their own axes while orbiting a central axis, and high-energy or vibrational mills that intensify impact for finer powders. Materials used as grinding media range from steel and stainless steel to ceramic and zirconia, chosen for hardness and contamination considerations.

Ball mills are valued for their simplicity and robustness, but they can be energy-intensive and susceptible to contamination and wear, particularly with reactive or abrasive materials.
