Ballastsystemet is a fundamental component in many types of watercraft, primarily ships and submarines, designed to control buoyancy and stability. Its primary function is to manage the weight distribution of a vessel by taking on or expelling water. This allows for precise adjustments to the ship's draft, trim, and overall stability.

In larger vessels, ballast systems typically consist of a network of tanks located at the bottom of the hull. These tanks can be filled with seawater or freshwater, or emptied by pumps. By strategically filling or emptying these ballast tanks, the captain can compensate for changes in weight due to cargo loading or unloading, fuel consumption, or even the effects of wave action. This ensures the vessel remains upright and stable, preventing capsizing.

For submarines, the ballast system is even more critical as it enables submersion and surfacing. Submarines have specialized ballast tanks called "main ballast tanks" (MBTs). When these tanks are flooded with water, the submarine's overall density increases, causing it to sink. To surface, compressed air is blown into the MBTs, forcing the water out and decreasing the submarine's density, allowing it to rise. In addition to MBTs, submarines also utilize smaller trim tanks to fine-tune their buoyancy and maintain a specific depth or orientation underwater. The efficient operation of the ballast system is therefore paramount for the safety and functionality of any vessel that relies on it.
