Balansoppervlakken, translated as balance surfaces, are a concept used in various fields, primarily in engineering and physics, to describe a state or condition where opposing forces or effects are equal. This equilibrium results in a stable or unchanging state.

In structural engineering, a balansoppervlak might refer to the neutral axis of a beam under bending. This is the line within the beam where no tensile or compressive stress occurs. Below the neutral axis, material is in tension, and above it, material is in compression. The balance point of these forces is the neutral axis.

Within fluid dynamics, the concept can relate to hydrostatic balance. This occurs when the upward buoyant force on an object submerged in a fluid is equal to the downward force of gravity acting on the object. If these forces are balanced, the object will remain suspended at a constant depth. Similarly, in atmospheric science, an isobaric surface represents a region of constant pressure, and in some atmospheric models, it can be considered a type of balance surface where vertical and horizontal pressure gradients might interact in a balanced way. The term emphasizes the point of equilibrium between competing influences.
