Backflödenskydd, often translated as backflow prevention or backflow protection, is a crucial system designed to prevent the reverse flow of water or other liquids into a potable water supply. This reverse flow, known as backflow, can occur due to a sudden drop in water pressure or an increase in pressure on the downstream side of the system. When backflow occurs, it can draw contaminants from non-potable sources, such as irrigation systems, industrial processes, or even sewage, into the clean drinking water, posing a significant health risk.

There are several types of backflow prevention devices. Air gaps are simple physical separations between a supply outlet and a receiving vessel. Mechanical backflow preventers, such as reduced pressure zone (RPZ) devices and pressure vacuum breakers (PVBs), use internal mechanisms to create a barrier against reverse flow. Double check valve assemblies are another common mechanical device, employing two independent check valves to ensure unidirectional flow.
