Axes lines refer to the lines that define the coordinate system in a graph or diagram. They mark the reference frame against which data values are measured, typically corresponding to the horizontal x-axis and the vertical y-axis. In some contexts, axis lines can extend beyond the data area to emphasize scale, crossings, or symmetry. The term is sometimes used interchangeably with axis spines or with the visible lines that form the plot boundary.

In graphical plotting libraries, axis lines are often implemented as configurable elements that can be styled or repositioned. For example, in Matplotlib, the axis lines are represented by spines, which are the four boundary lines: left, right, bottom, and top. These spines can be hidden, colored, thickened, or moved—such as placing a spine at a different position or crossing the axes at a specific data value—to alter the appearance and readability of the plot. Users may also enable or customize gridlines, ticks, and labels in coordination with the axis lines.

Axis lines play a key role in interpretation by providing a clear frame of reference and by aiding alignment of measurements and annotations. Designers may adjust their visibility or style to reduce visual clutter or to emphasize particular data features, such as symmetry around the origin or the location of zero. Variants exist across plotting and drawing tools, where some environments refer to them as axis lines, spines, or axis boundaries, while others implement them as independent line elements.
