Avihepadnaviruses are a genus of viruses within the family Hepadnaviridae. These viruses are known to infect birds, and their name is derived from "avian" and "hepadnavirus." The most well-known member of this genus is the duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV), which serves as a model organism for studying hepadnaviruses, including their human counterpart, the hepatitis B virus (HBV).

The genetic material of avihepadnaviruses is a partially double-stranded DNA genome that is circular. This genome encodes several viral proteins essential for replication and infectivity, including a DNA polymerase that also possesses reverse transcriptase activity. This unique replication strategy, involving an RNA intermediate, is a hallmark of hepadnaviruses.

Avihepadnaviruses are transmitted primarily through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, such as blood or feces. They can also be transmitted vertically from parent to offspring. Infections in birds can range from asymptomatic to causing liver inflammation (hepatitis) and other liver pathologies.
