Avicularial refers to a specialized zooid found in some colonial marine invertebrates, most notably bryozoans and hydrozoans. These zooids are modified for defense and are typically distinct in shape and size from the feeding zooids (autozooids). Avicularia are often described as resembling a bird's head or a bird's beak, hence the name, which comes from the Latin word "avis" meaning bird.
The primary function of avicularia is to protect the colony from predators and fouling organisms. They possess
