The surrounding terrain includes scrubland and patchy woodland, with climate characterized as temperate and continental, featuring hot summers and cold winters.

History: Avakaevandus was established in 1978 by state mining authorities as a purpose-built mining town. The open-pit operation expanded through the 1980s and became the economic core of the locality. In 1999 the settlement gained municipal status within Veridia’s governance framework and began to diversify service and support industries.

Economy and infrastructure: The mine remains the primary employer, complemented by ore-handling, processing plants, and maintenance services. A regional road and a spur to export facilities connect Avakaevandus to broader markets, while logistics, construction, and ancillary services support daily life in the community.
