Auxin is a class of plant hormones that play a crucial role in plant growth and development. The most common and well-studied auxin is indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Auxins are synthesized primarily in the young leaves and developing seeds of plants and are then transported to other parts of the plant where they exert their effects.

These hormones are involved in a wide range of developmental processes. One of the most prominent roles of auxin is in regulating cell elongation. In shoots, auxin promotes cell expansion, leading to stem growth and elongation. Conversely, in roots, high concentrations of auxin can inhibit cell elongation, helping to direct root growth downwards.

Auxin also influences phototropism, the tendency of plants to grow towards a light source. Light causes auxin to migrate to the shaded side of a stem, stimulating cell elongation on that side and causing the stem to bend towards the light. Similarly, auxins are involved in gravitropism, the growth response to gravity.

Furthermore, auxins are essential for apical dominance, the phenomenon where the main stem grows more vigorously than lateral branches. They are also involved in fruit development and in the process of root formation. The precise concentration of auxin is critical, as both deficiencies and excesses can lead to abnormal growth patterns. Plants have sophisticated mechanisms to synthesize, transport, and respond to auxin, making it a fundamental regulator of their life cycle.
