Automatbrytere, also known as automatic circuit breakers, are essential electrical safety devices designed to protect electrical circuits from damage caused by overcurrents or short circuits. Their primary function is to interrupt the flow of electricity when an abnormal condition is detected, thereby preventing potential hazards such as fires and equipment damage.

The core principle behind an automatbryter's operation relies on a mechanism that detects excessive current. In many common types, this is achieved through a bimetallic strip. When current flows through the breaker, it also passes through the bimetallic strip. If the current exceeds a safe limit for a sustained period, the strip heats up. Due to the different thermal expansion rates of the two metals forming the strip, it bends. This bending action triggers a lever that opens the electrical contacts within the breaker, interrupting the circuit.

Another common tripping mechanism utilizes an electromagnet. A coil carrying the circuit current generates a magnetic field. If a very high current, such as that produced by a short circuit, flows through the coil, the magnetic field becomes strong enough to attract an armature. This armature then activates the tripping mechanism, opening the contacts.

Once an automatbryter has tripped, it must be manually reset to restore power to the circuit. This manual reset is a crucial safety feature, requiring the user to acknowledge the overload or fault condition before re-energizing the system. Automatbrytere are rated for specific current capacities and fault interruption capabilities, ensuring they are suitable for the intended application. They are widely used in homes, commercial buildings, and industrial facilities as a reliable alternative to fuses.
