Austenitintervallet refers to the temperature range over which a steel transforms into austenite. Austenite, also known as gamma-iron (γ-Fe), is a high-temperature allotrope of iron. In plain carbon steels, the transformation to austenite begins at the lower critical temperature, A1, and is complete at the upper critical temperature, A3 (for hypoeutectoid steels) or Acm (for hypereutectoid steels).

The precise temperatures of the austenitintervallet are dependent on the carbon content of the steel and the presence of alloying elements. As carbon content increases, the A1 temperature decreases, and the A3 temperature increases. Alloying elements can significantly shift these critical temperatures. For example, elements like nickel and manganese tend to lower the austenitintervallet, while chromium and molybdenum tend to raise it.

Understanding the austenitintervallet is crucial in heat treatment processes such as hardening and annealing. To achieve a fully austenitic structure for subsequent quenching and hardening, the steel must be heated into its austenitintervallet and held for a sufficient time to allow for complete transformation and homogenization. When cooling from the austenitintervallet, different microstructures like pearlite, bainite, or martensite can form depending on the cooling rate. The extent of the austenitintervallet influences the grain size and thus the mechanical properties of the final microstructure.
